Processor names can feel like alphabet soup. But a handful of concepts explain almost everything you need to know to compare chips and pick the right one.
Cores and threads
Cores are the individual workers inside a processor; more cores let it handle more tasks at once. Threads are virtual lanes that help each core juggle work more efficiently. For everyday use, even a modest core count is plenty — heavy multitasking and creative work benefit from more.
Clock speed and efficiency
Clock speed, measured in gigahertz, is how fast each core runs. Higher is generally better, but newer chips often do more per cycle, so a lower-clocked modern processor can outperform an older, faster-sounding one. Efficiency also affects battery life and heat.
- Light use (browsing, documents): an entry-level chip is fine
- Multitasking and office work: a mid-range processor is ideal
- Creative or technical workloads: choose more cores and higher performance
